Notes:
Over two years ago, in October 2011, Larry Lazar and I co-founded of The Climate Reality St. Louis Meet Up. Around this time, Larry set up the home page for the group on Meet Up.com and inserted this image as our main profile picture. This Bill McKibben quote and image haunted me ever since then:
Larry does not even remember the original source on the web where he grabbed it. A quick search on the web, I could not find the original source this quote.
However, the ture origin does not matter. The best way to honor and credit Bill McKibben is to join the movement take action on climate change.
How can you join the movement? These are the best groups I know that are taking effective action on climate change:
1. 350.org. Founded by Bill McKibben. One of their biggest campaigns, Go Fossil Free, is to build large local grassroot campaigns to persuade colleges and universities across the United States to divest their endowments from fossil fuel companies.
2. Citizens Climate Lobby. Their single focus to empower individuals to establish positive relationship with the media and members of Congress so they will a carbon fee and dividend.
3. The Climate Reality Project. This group has trained over 6,000 Leaders from across the United States and world, including, Larry and me, to give presentations to groups in your community on the problem and solutions on climate change.
4. Sierra Club's Beyond Coal Campaign. Burning coal is responsible for one third of US carbon emissions. Since this campaign started in 2010, it helped to retire over 160 coal power plants across the United States.
Just keep in mind this old African proverb, "If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together."
