Denial: we all do it!
Bite Notes: Mea Culpa!
Sometimes climate denial happens because the solutions are perceived to threaten our lifestyle.
"Denial is a defence mechanism postulated by Sigmund Freud in which a person is faced with a fact that is too uncomfortable to accept and rejects it instead, insisting that it is not true despite what may be overwhelming evidence. The subject may use:
- simple denial - deny the reality of the unpleasant fact altogether.
- minimisation - admit the fact but deny its seriousness
- projection - admit both the fact and seriousness but deny responsibility." (Wikipedia: Denial)
All three levels can clearly be seen in climate denial.
Denial may also occur when a problem or solution threatens other values other than lifestyle, such as lives, such as our livlihood, health, identity, deeply-held values, worldview, self-esteem, social standing, relationships and, indeed, our very lives. Certainly, nearly all of us remain in denial of our own mortality much of our lives.
