Notes: In this video, Trace Dominguez uses the 2008 Disney animated feature WALL-E to respond to climate change contrarians.

The film is about a robot named WALL-E, who is designed to clean up an abandoned, polluted, waste-covered Earth far in the future. It was a very bleak futuristic view of human overconsumption turning our planet into a wasteland.

When it was released in June 2008, it was a box office and critical success. Rotten Tomatoes noted 96% of critics gave the film positive reviews. WALL-E won the 2008 Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film and the 2008 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

About minute and a half in this video, Dominguez rebuts the argument that there is still disagreement among climate scientists:

“This is when you mention Albuquerque. From 1991 to 2012, there were close to 14,000 peer reviewed published scientific papers exploring climate science. 24 of those said global warming is fake. To put that in perspective, that is like saying, ‘every person in the United States agrees with climate change except the population of Albuquerque.’…

If a movie had 98% approval, would you go to see it? There are more people who hated WALL-E than there are climate scientists denying climate change. Have you ever met someone how hates WALL-E?”

His last rebuttal is “Global warming isn’t really the best term. It’s actually climate change because we have to look at these changes over lifetimes. While, yes, the globe is warming. It is also going to cool off causing more snow, more ice, more droughts and generally, more extreme weather…

The important thing is that nobody hates WALL-E. But, until we learn to work with nature, nobody wants to live on his planet either.”
